How to use Instagram? Oddly enough, even a seemingly ordinary application for publishing photos requires a competent approach to use. While the rest publish numerous meaningless posts with food, cats and wishes for a good day, we will deal with the types of pages, how to choose ideas for publications, how to make them attractive and how often they should be done at all.
Now, when you understood from the previous article “Why does a fitness trainer need Instagram” and decided to start using it, it’s time to decide on your positioning. That is, people coming to your page should understand what this page is all about. Most often, Instagram accounts are divided into three types: personal page, thematic community and online store.
How to use Instagram
- Personal page. This is most common type of positioning. You can post any publications about yourself, about your occupation, about your professional achievements, about the achievements of your clients and not only. Publish photos and videos from workouts, from training camps, from competitions, from thematic seminars, workshops and conferences. Publish materials that confirm your professional skills as a fitness trainer.
- Thematic community. It can be anything you like, as for the fitness industry, fitness business, various sports, training methods, proper nutrition, recovery, motivation and more. This can be the page of a fitness club, of a sporting goods store or just a community of those who lead a healthy lifestyle. As a rule, such a page can be administrated by several people at once, either by one moderator or an SMM specialist.
- Online store. If you are selling something, Instagram can serve as an excellent platform for this purpose. Such a page can serve as a kind of showcase to which you can upload photos of the goods with a description of its characteristics, prices, delivery terms and more. The store can be used both by a private person and by a fitness club for advertising and selling membership or promoting various goods and services.
How to find ideas for publications
Now that you have decided on type of your page, you need to set the topic and frequency of publications for this format. In other words, you need a content plan – what and when you will post. We will start from the topic. So, you’re a fitness trainer, work in a club, train clients, know how to conduct training, build proper nutrition, correctly recover, maintain motivation and so on.
There is the so-called decomposition technique, when you break one global task into several smaller ones. So, you have chosen four topics: training, nutrition, recovery and motivation. Now let’s divide each of these topics, for example, into three parts. The result should be something like the one shown below.
- Training: exercises / programs / equipment
- Nutrition: regimen / food / supplements
- Recovery: sleep / measures / terms
- Motivation: goals / motives / results
Now that we clearly know on what topic we will publish photos or videos on Instagram, it’s necessary to specifically decide what exactly will need to be filmed or photographed. Brainstorming will help you with this. Imagine that you have a puzzle. There are only four elements in it and they are clearly known, but the final result that is obtained when they are combined is different each time. These four elements are: photo, video, description and hashtags. Now take a notebook, pen and during 10 minutes write down absolutely any ideas of publications that only come to your mind. First, choose whether this will be photo or video, then come up with a competent description and add thematic hashtags at the end. Ultimately, some of the ideas will have to be crossed out, some will need to be finalized, and some can be implemented right now.
How to make your posts attractive
Let’s move on. You already know for sure what you will upload to your page, but first you need to understand the very approach to creating photos or videos. Below I will give some tips that you should keep in mind every time you create publications.
Tip number 1. Remember that customers only come to you when you help them solve a specific problem. Your publications should demonstrate how they solve this or that problem. When photographing exercises, indicate in the description that they help build muscles, lose weight or get in shape etc. When photographing the food, indicate in the description info about the calories and also what useful properties it carries. In other words, “don’t sell a diet pill, sell the opportunity to lose weight.”
Tip number 2. If it’s possible, post photos of your clients (with their permission, of course), whom you helped achieve the desired result. Photos like “Before and after” have very great popularity and significant influence, in the description of which you (or what’s better, the client himself) can write about how quickly and by what means you managed to achieve such a result. Publications confirming your expertise or your skill level with specific examples significantly increase the level of credibility.
Tip number 3. Periodically arrange contests or sweepstakes, because this, firstly, significantly increases the activity of existing subscribers, and secondly, gives a significant increase in new ones. When a person sees that he can win something or get something with a big discount, it immediately ignites a fire in his eyes. Give discounts on personal training, or fitness club memberships, or various products or services. Come up with prizes, create conditions, set deadlines and people will reach for you.
Tip number 4. Recently, the so-called “life hacks” have been very popular. This is some unobvious secrets that can make your life easier and which only the chosen ones or insiders know, like experts, such as fitness trainers. For example, you can publish life hacks, how to make a fat-burning or a mass-gaining cocktail at home. How to create a home gym using the improvised materials and a duct tape. How to train at the beach, if you have only TRX straps with you and so on. Life hacks is loved by everybody.
Tip number 5. Use statistics or infographics in your publications. This is also one of those varieties of publications that are incredibly popular nowadays. People love statistics about literally anything, especially when it’s packed in a beautiful graphic shell with numbers, percents, graphs, charts, signs and pictures. For example, do you know that to burn 1 pound of fat (that is about 450 grams) you need to spend at least 3.5 thousand calories, which usually takes about 9 hours of work on a cardio machine?
Tip number 6. Periodically publish various kinds of motivational videos or photos. You can create them by yourself, or you can take them from the Internet. Of course, motivators should match the topic of your account. In our case, it can be such popular quotes or statements about the importance of exercising, playing sports, leading a healthy lifestyle, eating proper food, and so on. Think about how you could help your clients to maintain their motivation for training and create such posts.
How often you need to make posts
In fact, there’s no specific answer to this question. In each particular case, the frequency of publications can be dramatically different. Someone leads a very active lifestyle, takes part in competitions, training camps, and with each new change of location uploads lots of new photos. Someone else conducts a workshop in one club today, participates in a seminar in another club tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow goes to another city for a conference and also posts everything he sees in the feed. And someone the third is just starting his journey both in coaching and as a user of Instagram and posts on average once a week.
It all depends on you. How active your lifestyle is, how full of events your life is, how ready you are to make high-quality publications and how responsible you are to not litter the page with numerous meaningless photographs of everything, from a cactus to fried potatoes, and think about your own post in advance and make it unique interesting and informative.
If you are just starting to learn Instagram, you probably will not be able to make posts every day because you have no such habit, and doing it once a week is too rare. Therefore, try starting with three posts a week and then move from this figure in the direction that will be most comfortable for you.
You can’t get into the head of your current or potential subscribers to understand whether they like this content or not. But today we figured out how to maximize our chances. When you have a specific content plan, when you already clearly know what, when, why, and for whom to publish, you only have to do it. How the public will react to this – you never know beforehand, therefore the rule here is simple. Have a great idea? Test it. Developed a new publication format? Test it. Learned about new promotion methods? Test it. As they say – whoever seeks will always find. So try, test and remember that now you know more about Instagram, which means that you have a higher chances for success.
