The secrets of work of a fitness trainer are the conclusions drawn from his own previous experience. Some of them create difficulties, others help on the path to financial well-being and career building. Both those and others would seem obvious, but nevertheless, if you just taking the first steps in the profession of a fitness trainer, you most likely don’t know about them. So, get ready, now we will eliminate this gap.
Secrets of work of a fitness trainer
Self-learners. Often, those are either cursed or admired. Most often people blame those who have lack of talent and admire those who help people and raise their interest to a healthy lifestyle. A self-learner gets a respect only if he is an enthusiast of his profession, if he grows up as a specialist, constantly learns and transmits this knowledge to people. Such persons often start their own blogs, run a YouTube channels and communicate through the Facebook, Instagram or Twitter pages with their fans and subscribers. For a self-learner, the first secret of a fitness trainer’s job is that he must be completely dedicated to his craft.
The trainer must evolve. A serious trainer is an enthusiast of his work. Learning process has a beginning, but hasn’t got the end. If you want to become an expert in your craft, you must visit various industry congresses, seminars and conferences. At the same time, in order to become an expert, you don’t need to take courses, pass the exams and receive diplomas. That’s where we return to the previous paragraph about self-learners, who expand their knowledge base entirely on their own. Anyone who pays no attention to his education, in a competitive environment loses the game first. This is the second secret of work of a fitness trainer.
The trainer must train. This common truth is dictated to him by the industry, with which he decided to link his professional activities. A person who transmits the concept of a healthy lifestyle must be an example to follow for his clients. It is not necessary to be a 100 kg pumped up bodybuilder, but at least you should be fit. This is just as important as setting the right example in training, nutrition, recovery, motivation and lifestyle in general. The third secret of work of a fitness trainer lies in the work on your own body. The process of its improvement, as well as with mental development – must be continuous.
The qualities of a professional fitness trainer are charisma, positivity, vigor, the ability to competently build a speech and to attract people. Anybody can master these skills, so if you don’t possess them initially, it doesn’t threaten your career. It is important to work on yourself, communicate, meet and expand your circle of interests. A friendly, smiling and well educated person is always a good talk partner. He’s a priori more chances to attract clients to his personal trainings. The fourth secret of work of a fitness trainer lies in the need to develop communication skills, such as oratory, influence, persuasion, etc.
Seasonality. The fitness industry is experiencing ups and downs. From September to November, club attendance is always increasing. In December starts preparation for the New Year, which leads to a lowered attendance. From January to May, there is a slight but steady increase in the flow of customers. Summer, from June to August – is the period of stagnation. In the “low season”, a new trainer can’t earn anything, because in December people invest in gifts, not in fitness. In the summer, they invest in vacation, but again not in fitness. Advice: build a customer base that will smooth out seasonal fluctuations.
Rivalry. Partly, we’ve already touched this topic above. For the trainer a client means money. As a rule, one trainer to another is not so much a friend but a competitor, and in the pursuit of clients it sometimes happens that one trainer tries to entice a client who’s engaged with another. Such things should be stopped as soon as you come to work at the fitness club. If you’re afraid to warn another trainer, you will continue to lose clients, but if you have the courage to do this, it is likely that such things will not happen again. Advice: be strong, stay tough and don’t be afraid to strike back.
Disease. If you want to make good money, you will need to carry personal trainings every day, and not one or two, but up to ten. Being engaged with each client for about an hour, you will come to work at 10 in the morning and leave at 20 in the evening, up to 6-7 days a week. It is needless to say that you will not have the opportunity to get sick, leave or take a day of rest. Otherwise, you will simply lose customers. Or they will go to another trainer, who was in the gym when you decided to get sick suddenly, or they would go to another club. Advice: watch your health, sleep well, eat well and take vitamins.
Private life. In order to make good money you’ll have to carry a lot of personal trainings. A lot means 8-10 per day, 6 days a week. In this case, most likely you will spend your only day off at home, just relaxing from a hard and tense week. It’s quite natural that with such a workload you will not have time to go to cafes, clubs and cinemas to find a soul mate there. And even if you have it, you still will not have enough time to spend together, except the situation, when your soul mate is also working as a fitness trainer (or working out) in the same club. Advice: increase the price and reduce the number of clients.
Being in no mood. Forget about it at all. At the workplace, you should be present solely in a good mood. You have overslept? No one cares. You forgot the keys at home, somebody stepped on your foot in bus, your wife filed for divorce, or you didn’t have time to make a deposit for a mortgage? This is absolutely cares no one except you. Clients are the same people as you, and their lives are full of their own negativity. They come to the fitness club not just to train, but also to relax. If you will load them with your negativity, the clients will most likely leave you. Advice: keep your problems with yourself.
Sales plan. In most clubs, if not in all, with rare exceptions, the trainer has a plan for the number of trainings that he should sell during the month. A plan implies a lower limit of the quantity of closed deals. It means that if the trainer should carry 80 trainings, and he goes only for 50 or 60, he could be given a remark. Next month it may be a warning. For the third time, if the trainer fails to fulfill the plan, he will be fired. No offense and nothing personal – just business. Advice: don’t think about the plan as about the enemy, because it’s actually an incentive to be more efficient at work.
The difference between personal and individual trainings. In some clubs, this is not always the same thing. Personal training means that you will spend an hour and a half with only one client. Individual training is cheaper (sometimes twice) than a person and, as a rule, a trainer can work with several people at the same time. (from 2 and up to 10). There is also a pair training (which calls “duet”), when two people can train at the same time with the same trainer for the same cost. Advice: puzzle out the services and prices of your fitness club, otherwise you will be working hard for a dime.
What the trainer should not do. This is not really taught, but the trainer absolutely shouldn’t dig into his smartphone while working with the client, run to the smoking room at every opportunity, take hot drinks at work, use foul language, get angry and be rude to customers. Never ever try to put money into your pocket secretly from the others, because sooner or later you will be exposed and fired. Also never try to sell behind the backs any food supplements, drugs, steroids, etc (if this is against the rules). Advice: always be polite with clients and follow your job description.
Without experience you will not be taken to a prestigious club. In the previous article, we have already touched on this topic, and here it is only worth repeating that no one could be employed to the prestigious or luxury club directly from the training courses, simply due to lack of experience. In addition, the clients in such clubs are very capricious and demanding to all club personnel and trainers in particular. If your level of knowledge doesn’t suit them, they can easily complain to the administration that the club recruits insufficiently qualified employees. Advice: gain experience in regular clubs, and then go to more prestigious ones.
Body is not an indicator. The real indicator is your mind. This is common truth, which is not taught during training courses. A good seller is the one who have well developed communication skills. There were cases when the employer didn’t hire the trainer even after graduating from prestigious courses. You wonder why? This is because they were not taught communication skills, persuasion and sales. Even if you are a successful sportsman in the past or in the present, it still doesn’t mean that you will be a good methodologist. Advice: develop not only the body, but also the mind.
The first month. This is the time during which you literally have to live in a club in order to become familiar with clients and increase your level of trust. As soon as you get a job, you will need to get clients who you can sell your services to. Sales come only through the recognition. If you keep on staying in their sight, communicate with them, smile, help, prompt and generally show yourself as an open and friendly person, people will reach out to you. Advice: show the clients how important are they for you and you will become for them the most indispensable person.
Troubleshooting. Any problems that you will encounter in your work require deep analysis, not superficial conclusions. If you don’t have clients, analyze the situation – why this happens and as soon as you find the cause – look for ways to fix the problem. Build a cause-effect connection: no clients (why?) – not enough knowledge (how to improve?) – to complete a training course (final solution). Have no clients? Look for the cause. There are clients, but they don’t go to you? Look for the cause. Clients go to you, but don’t buy personal trainings? Look for the cause. Advice: always analyze the results of your work.
Learn. Always ask yourself questions and always question your knowledge and skills. This is your own incentive for personal growth. Setting up a permanent learning process is quite easy, you need to create a closed repeating cycle. The conditions are simple – it is enough to know, that you know not enough. It will encourage you to learn. Having learned and come to a new level of knowledge, keep in mind that this knowledge is also not enough and start a new round of learning spiral. The learning process, as I have said more than once, is a continuous process. Advice: make learning your habit.
Cheating. This is a situation in which a cunning trainer comes to collusion with the administrator and offers him a bribe to send clients only to him or more often to him. So of course you can’t do that, but the club manager doesn’t care who closes the most deals. The main thing for him is that the cash comes to the cashier, and who will bring this money is not so important. Therefore, don’t try to uncover the conspiracy, because the manager will not help you, and the participants in the conspiracy will spoil your life and work. Advice: attract clients not through the crooks, but through the word of mouth.
People often come to the fitness club not for results, but just to talk. It often happens that a trainer with regular constitution (not looking like bodybuilder) can carry a lot of personal trainings and at the same time earn decently. What is the secret – you already know. The ability to influence, convince and communicate. Speak, talk and chat. You can be a thrice champion of a country, Europe or the world, but if you are reticent and non communicative, your value as a trainer is reduced to zero. As you remember, the manager assesses you as a person who can sell. If you don’t know how to sell, I’m sorry – you are a bad trainer, regardless of your sports achievements.
Also remember the fact that success is achieved only by people with an active life stance, who are constantly developing and learning something new. Become such a person. Develop comprehensively, read books, watch movies, listen to music, go to exhibitions, participate in conferences, travel whenever possible, communicate with people, pay attention to them and you will become the most indispensable person for your clients, successful trainer and a dominant figure. That’s the way to success for a person who is planning his career in the fitness industry.
